Living in a world so visually oriented, the ability to see is often taken for granted. Though most people can see colors and lines with no problem, there are those who literally use their hands to "see" the world and those who need stark contrasting colors to make out visuals. "Hand" represents those who are visually impaired or blind. It allows others to see and feel just as those who are visually impaired. Braille and a textured outlined hand allows others to "see" the image with his or her hand. The bright contrasting colors against the black background serve as visual aids to those who have a hard time deciphering shapes and text otherwise.
"Hand" is a piece set on an all black background. The center of the piece is taken by four brightly contrasting colored squares tilted slightly overlapping each other. The square in the top left corner of the formation is bright lime green, the square in the top right bright fuchsia, in the bottom right bright orange and in the bottom left bright blue. Resting on top of this square formation is the black silhouette of a hand. In the palm of the hand is the word "hand" spelled out in lower-case Braille letters in bright contrasting colors. The Braille letter for "h" is bright lime green, "a" bright orange, "n" bright fuchsia and "d" in bright blue. Underneath the centerpiece of the hand resting on the squares is the English word "hand" spelled out in bold lowercase letters, the "h" in bright lime green, the "a" in bright orange, the "n" in bright fuchsia, and the "d" in bright blue. Underneath each letter of the word hand is the corresponding lowercase letter in Braille. All Braille lettering on this piece has a tactile surface and the hand has a tactile outline.
