Note from Artist

This image depicts how communication methods are as varied as those who adopt them. The silhouetted figures shown are each saying "listen" in a different language- sign language, Braille, computer-aided speech, German, and French. Just like those who speak a foreign language, people with communication-related disabilities simply have a different way of speaking. Using different communication methods does not change what you say, it simply changes how those around you must listen.

Description of Art Work

This 16 inch by 20 inch artwork depicts five people communicating using different methods. It suggests that people with a communication "disability" simply use another language. Brightly colored silhouettes sit and stand in various positions against a blue-green background. The silhouettes are transparent and create a visual layering effect. Each person has a word bubble which contains the word "listen" in the language in which they communicate; the languages used are German, French, American Sign Language, Braille, and computer aided vocalization. At the bottom of the artwork, a caption reads, "its not about how you speak, its about how you listen."
