Description

This program will provide staff with up-to-date knowledge of Assistive Technology (AT) and accommodations in the workplace, home, educational, and community environments. Courses will provide a necessary grounding in the policy and practical understanding of AT and environmental accommodations and will emphasize real-world applications and case studies, based upon the experience of CATEA and the College of Architecture staff.

Course 1: Application of Assistive Technology

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the recommended process for developing accommodation solutions.
  2. Describe their role in the process of identifying creative accommodation solutions.
  3. Demonstrate the techniques for finding resources and supplemental funding.
  4. Describe the features of at least three types of AT commonly used in home, work and community environments.

This course will be a mixture of lecture, open discussion and exercises/activities.

  • Lecture will incorporate case studies provided by the Office of DD, to highlight the recommended accommodation solution process. Instructors will also provide information regarding AT common across environments, resources for finding and specifying appropriate AT, and techniques for applying low-tech solutions to common problems.
  • Discussions will draw upon the participants' experiences in developing ISP's to identify potential AT applications and to identify common problems to be addressed in subsequent courses.
  • Exercises will provide the opportunity for participants to practice creative problem solving involving accommodation solutions and to gain feedback from instructors regarding the recommended accommodation process.
  • Technology highlighted in this course will include: wheelchairs, scooters, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, new or forthcoming technologies, and "do-it-yourself" techniques.

Course 2: Home Accommodation Solutions

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the recommended process as it applies to the home environment.
  2. Describe their role in the process of identifying accommodation solutions in the home environment.
  3. Describe features of AT applications relating to SIS categories including Home Living Activities, Lifelong Learning Activities, Health and Safety Activities, and Social Activities.

This course will be a mixture of lecture, open discussion and exercises/activities.

  • Lecture will include information relating to AT and accommodation solutions common to the home environment. Solutions will focus on activities drawn from case studies provided by the Office DD and on typical activity groupings from the SIS. Instructors will highlight unique characteristics of home accommodation solutions involving independent contractors, landlords, and family members.
  • Discussions will focus on current methods participants have used to provide home accommodation solutions and how the recommended accommodation process may help to address barriers they have encountered along the way.
  • Exercises will provide the opportunity for participants to practice creative problem solving involving accommodation solutions and to gain feedback from instructors regarding the recommended accommodation process.
  • Technology highlighted in this course will include; aids to daily living, environmental control units, training software, home modifications, custom fabrication solutions, and transfer aids.

Course 3: Workplace & Community Accommodation Solutions

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the recommended process as it applies to the workplace and community environment.
  2. Describe their role in the process of identifying accommodation solutions in the workplace and community environment.
  3. Describe features of AT applications relating to SIS categories including Community Living Activities, Lifelong Learning Activities, Employment Activities and Social Activities.

This course will be a mixture of lecture, open discussion and exercises/activities.

  • Lecture will include information relating to AT and accommodation solutions common to the workplace and community environments. Solutions will focus on activities drawn from case studies provided by the Office DD and on typical activity groupings from the SIS. Instructors will highlight unique characteristics of workplace and community accommodation solutions involving employers, co-workers, public transportation, and public facilities.
  • Discussions will focus on current methods participants have used to provide workplace / community accommodation solutions and how the recommended accommodation process may help to address barriers they have encountered along the way.
  • Exercises will provide the opportunity for participants to practice creative problem solving involving accommodation solutions and to gain feedback from instructors regarding the recommended accommodation process.
  • Technology highlighted in this course will include; computer access, personal digital assistants (PDA’s), training software, custom fabrication solutions, navigation aids, transportation solutions for public transportation and for driving independently.
