The literature is a very broad and deep covering the subject of aging in place and the behavior of older people related to environment. Spatial Behavior of Older People, written by Leon Pastalan and Daniel Carson, published in 1970, was a seminal piece of literature in this field, point the way for numerous other texts that followed.

Search the literature of the social and behavioral sciences that has been devoted to studies conducted among elderly people.

Search also the architectural design literature that has developed a significant body of knowledge on the subject of building for the elderly as well as standards for residential and commercial construction.

Search the industrial design and product design literature to better understand the product issues related to product and furniture development.

Search government publications for demographic and socio/economic statistical background on where the elderly live, what kind of living arrangements are prevalent, how much income is at their disposal and how many suffer disabilities.
