Slide 65 Content

Water faucets and control knobs and levers are important control and display devices in the general daily activities of older people. While the tub controls are marked for hot and cold, the sink control isn't and could be better designed to cue the user.

Narration of Slide 65

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 227 KB) or read the transcript:

The functionality of water faucets and controls is directly related to the industry's need to provide fashion and decoration. Clear marking of controls seems secondary to appearance. Additionally, installation can preclude or abrogate the location of hot and cold controls if builders reverse the convention of left hand for hot and right hand for cold.

The single lever control cannot be excepted and should provide clear directional marking for temperature control.
