Lift Chair Egress...

Narration of Slide 53

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 366 KB) or read the transcript:

There are a number of manufacturers of electro-mechanical lift chairs. For some older adults, these chairs are entirely appropriate and can be very beneficial - especially when they are combined with semi-supine, rocking and recline features. However, the method of egress is entirely different from that of a static chair because the chair occupant is not moving his or her center of gravity forward of the torso, the CG is moving slightly behind the torso until the occupant is in the standing position. If an older adult experiences weakness, dizziness or numbness in the lower legs, the chair occupant may fall rather than stand. In the selection of such expensive products, it is wise to consult with a medical professional and also someone who is an expert in seating and positioning.
