The mechanics or methodology of chair egress without assistance are straight-forward. Simply, the chair occupant must move the torso forward moving the center of gravity of the body forward over the feet and then using leg strength to drive upward and rise to the standing position. Younger adults are usually able to egress most single position chairs without using their arms and hands on the armrests. However, if there is reduced leg strength and knee closure, it will be necessary to move the torso even further forward to rise - a far more difficult condition. At some point, arm and leg strength are necessary to rise from a chair.
