Designing for the Life Span Segment 4Egress...The Motion of Rising from a Chair.

Arms that extend beyond the leading edge of the seat platform or- in suspension seating- the cushion, provide the best designed extension to permit ease of egress.

The photograph in this slide is of the "Autumn Chair" at the Georgia Institute of Technology by designers affiliated with the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access. The chair was intended for older adults who have endured strokes. The armrests are extended with a rise at the leading edge of the armrest. This provides tactile identification of the end of the armrest as well as proper positioning for the hand. The chair has a wide footprint for added stability and a lowered seat platform to accommodate smaller older adults.
