Designing for the Life Span Segment 4Chair egress, or exiting from the chair, requires a transfer of the center of gravity of the body over the heels of the feet. Among he elderly- especially those over the age of 70- there is approximately a 40% loss of muscular strength in the upper thighs and less flexibility and closure of the knee joints and hip joints making this task more difficult.

There can be up to a 40% decrease in strength in the upper thigh among people over 70, Knee bend or closure is reduced making it more difficult to pull the feet back under the leading edge of a chair. It is more difficult for an older adult to bend forward to move his or her center of gravity over the feet to rise.
In the slide above, the lady attempts to rise or "egress" from a chair illustrating the points discussed. Her inability to move her torso forward or obtain sufficient knee closure inhibits her rise from the chair.
