The exclusionary nature of the traditional percentile methodology can be best understood by seeing the position of older adults in comparison to the general adult population. The 50th percentile woman, for example, is very close in body dimensions to the 5th percentile woman in the general population. Therefore designing to accommodate either 90 or 95 % of the general population would still be excluding as much as 50% of the older adult female population. The same problem presents itself with the male population.
