Designing for the Life Span Segment 4Virtually all current models of ranges for the home have the control and display functions mounted on a "backsplash" forcing the user to reach over burners in order to actuate the product. Confusion exists regarding the visual connection between burners and controls. Display text is frequently too small to read and glare off reflective surfaces obscures display.

This range has a relatively common relationship of control to burner and to the oven. The backsplash houses the controls - but the relationship of the control to burner can be confusing. Mistakes are commonly made about which control actuates which burner by all generations.
Safety is also a concern if the older adult must reach beyond a burner that is in use to gain access to a control. Sweaters, and other garments may catch fire or there can be burning from foods being cooked. However, electric burners have advantages over gas burners in this regard.
