Kitchens have achieved a degree of architectural uniformity owing to development of a "modular" approach shared by cabinet and appliance manufacturers. Nevertheless, reach to upper shelves and to lower level storage can present accessibility issues for older adults.

Narration of Slide 27

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 258 KB) or read the transcript:

The contemporary dishwasher is not only useful in expediting the cleaning of dishes and kitchenware, it is secondary storage. New models of dishwashers use the full height of the unit to provide greater washing capacity. The tradeoff is the door opens downward very close to floor level and is harder to load for someone having difficulty in bending over.

Note also that the touch sensitive panel utilizes control and display graphics that are seem out of focus - although they are not. Their utility could be increased with greater contrast.
