Designing for the Life Span: Segment 4.

Aging in Place.

Narration of Slide 19

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 343 KB) or read the transcript:

Current thinking about successful aging and maintenance of independence focuses upon having aging people remain in their homes as long as possible... aging in place. Alternatives, such as moves to retirement centers, progressing toward assisted living and finally long-term care - without choice - are seen as diminishing independence and increasing the cost of care.

Aging in place requires that personal assistance, support, health care, and other requirements for sustaining any older adult in their own home be delivered to that home. Initially, cost of care for such a concept is lower. With increases in severity of disability, that cost benefit changes.
