Hearing is certainly fundamental to communication, but the principal reason why the human being hears is to protection from danger - even before that danger is visible. Contemporary society has as many dangers inherent during daily activity as did the primitive clans of hunters searching for game in a dense forest.
Additionally, sound aids positioning and judgment of relative distance. It assists in the location of other people and other sources of sound.
Sound may be the first indicator of trouble with the engine in a car... When taking cars for servicing people usually describe a sound their automobile is making.
