It would seem in American culture that environments are actually supposed to be noisy. Streets, buildings, automobiles, events, eating establishments are all literally filled with sound.
Noise pollution is both general and specific in its source. Some younger people are destroying their hearing through willing use of damaging sound, know it, and keep on doing it. Unfortunately, just as there is second hand smoke from cigarettes, there is second hand noise affecting all who are part of the social fabric of America.
