Designing for the Life Span Segment 3Electronic Technologies and Older Adults...
Cellular telephone technology has advanced rapidly in only a singe decade. Use of a "cell-phone" has many important emergency applications for the older adult.
Of significance, and a problem that has not yet received the technological "fix" required, is the use of such wireless communications technology in conjunction with use of a hearing aid (shown to the right). Some phones have variable amplitude or loudness tuning that has advantages for older adults with moderate hearing loss - without hearing aid use.

A major issue for older users of wireless technology, such as the cellular phone, is their specific hearing loss and the interference or "feed-back" that occurs when cellular technology matches up with hearing aids. The current products allow for increasing the loudness of the sound of the phone - addressing some of the issues of amplitude hearing loss. This measure, however, requires use of the cell phone without use of a hearing aid. Some manufacturers, aware of this problem, have products that compensate for the problems of interface between the technologies.
