Designing for the Life Span Segment 3In this presentation mockup, the burner surfaces can be touched even when at full power because the heat can only be transferred to a metal surface. Even a blind person can locate the edge of the burners, the controls and the surface of the analog clock. The cook-top is homogenous and can be cleaned without removal of the burners.

The experimental range shown was the result of information gathered in research with blind users of the product resulting in controls and displays designed for their benefit. Burner surfaces were raised so that they could be located tactilely. The oven temperature control use an enlarged thumbwheel and a chiming device to signal raises in temperature. The clock on the front surface had a lift glass and standard hands to identify the time by feel. The surface of the cook-top was a homogenous ceramic that allowed the magnetic controls to be removed and the entire surface wiped clean.
Other technologies of a similar nature will emerge in the near future and have potential for extending universality in the use of appliances.
