Slide 39[D]

Slide 39 Content

Black text on a white ground in this display makes the types of cheeses impossible to distinguish one from the other. Displays in supermarkets are often poorly organized with poorly designed lighting- especially with regard to the needs of the older consumer. Note the specular glare of the fluorescent luminaire reflected in the glass surface of the case.

Narration of Slide 39

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 358 KB) or read the transcript:

The photographs in this slide depict a rather old-fashioned way of marking produce in a grocery store. The prices are with the item they are related to. However, produce and frozen food containers are a difficult problem - not only in terms of information for selection, the instructional materials for food preparation are frequently difficult to read owing to the glossiness of packaging and the smallness of fonts and type.

The streak of white light that is most apparent in the left side photograph is the reflected direct glare from over head illumination reflecting in the surface glazing. Contemporary super markets are utilizing more lighting within the showcases with less overhead fluorescent illumination.
