In the built environment and in many outdoor settings as well, a concept known as "redundant cueing" should be employed to insure communication of the message as it relates to decision making. In the illustration in this slide, the concept is hypothetically employed in communicating floor levels to elevator passengers. The signal inside the elevator is "doubled-up" by the graphic on the wall. It is also important to employ backup in sound communications as well.
Fundamentally, redundant cueing is the provision of signals to more than one sensory modality to communicate a specific message. It may also be seen as using repeats in messages as cues in order to insure communication.
