Humankind has advanced in its control over its own destiny, technology and scientific advances have defined ways of life, wars have been global and cataclysmic and human beings have left the surface of the earth to stand on the moon...... but perhaps the most significant change that occurred during the 20th century - altering societies forever - was the growth of the population of older adults.

While it is certainly possible to argue that humankind has made both steady and occasionally rapid progress in science and technology through the centuries, humankind did not experience advances changing the outlook for living and lifespan until the 20th century.
The overwhelming proportion of the human population has labored at a subsistence level of a primitive form of agriculture with men following the livelihoods of their fathers and women following their mothers. Much of humankind remains tethered to that subsistence level of existence - but not so for those fortunate enough to be born in the burgeoning industrial societies of Europe and America...
