Slide 67 Content
By the late 1980s, the government of the United States began promoting health among the population with an initiative called Healthy People 2000. With the population graying, the issue of health- and the cost of health care- had become important issues for the future cost of government; a problem that has not gone away...
-
The single greatest health problem in the American population is cardiovascular disease. 1.5 million Americans die of heart attacks every year.
-
The second greatest health problem- and a distant second- is all forms of cancer, killing 250,000 Americans every year.
-
Both health problems are partially environmental with eating, lack of exercise, alcohol and drug abuse and smoking contributing significantly to the mortality rates.
-
Promoting better health habits is seen as a significant step in cutting the impact of these two diseases and their costs.
