Conclusions Related to Location and Residence of Older Adults:
-
Older Americans are more likely to remain where they are than are other age segments of the population;
-
Out-migration from the middle section of America over the decades of the 20th century has left high proportions of older adults in the rural sections of the country;
-
Younger adults have largely moved to the coasts with California the state with the highest influx of migrant population - and the highest outflow of population as well;
-
In terms of housing preference and location, older adults are evenly divided as to living in age-segregated retirement communities or in mixed generational settings;
-
A popular myth about the American family is the idea that there are substantial numbers of households with three generations living together... this has never really been true and, currently, just over 500 thousand three generation households exist from a total of 105 million or just .5%.
