79% of all people over 50 own their own home (AgeWave). The average age of the purchaser of a single family dwelling unit is 55 years of age and the average cost of the purchase is $350,000.00. These home purchases have an important impact upon the purchase of home appliances, home electronics, security systems, home illumination, furniture and other product development for residential application.

With the case made regarding the proportion of wealth in the hands of older adults, the question begged is where does this money go? Housing, changes in housing and alternative housing is clearly a major reason for expending money - especially by those older Americans who are still maintaining employment. As this slide states, the average single family dwelling unit is selling at over $350 thousand dollars and is being purchased by someone between the ages of 45 and 55. Along with this purchase will be the acquisition of furnishings, appliances, gardening supplies and home services such as Internet, cable and communications. For these reasons, it is impossible to ignore issues of aging when any of these products are designed.
