Narration of Slide 49

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 360 KB) or read the transcript:

There is a relationship between the out-migration of young people from states in the middle of the country and the location of older Americans. Florida may be the exception as it has been viewed by many as a retirement state. The farm states of the middle of the country and those states that have remained relatively stable in terms of population influx have high proportions of older adults over 65.

This phenomenon must be viewed as potentially ending in the first half of the 21st century because the new wave of older adults will be located in urban and suburban settings - not rural America. The southwest and the mid-eastern region of Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania may see increases in already substantial proportions of older adults.
