Mobility, for a variety of reasons, is a critical aspect of American life. In 5 years from 1985 to 1990, the Census Bureau reported that 21.6 million Americans moved from one state to another. California, is the most volatile in terms of population flux. It both gained and lost the highest number of residents of any state in the union.

Americans move - and they have always moved. Prior to the 20th century it was westward by Conestoga wagon to acquire land and look for new opportunity. The men of the 1820 gold rush in Dahlonega, Georgia were also the men of the 1850 gold rush at Sutter's Mill in California... American's move. In the 20th century it has been movement from the farm to the city and from cities of the Midwest to cities of the east and west coast. California has been the final destination for many decades and, as stated in the slide, gains and loses more population than any other state. The south and southwestern United States were also destinations in the latter half of the 20th century. 75% of all jobs in Georgia went to someone from out of state in the 90s. American's move - and they move more than once in a lifetime.
