Employment.

These data are drawn from all individuals currently employed by an institution, company or government agency (123,060,000 from a total workforce of 131,000,000 people). Green coding indicates those categories of employment that can be construed broadly as "service" (61%).

Narration of Slide 45

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 432 KB) or read the transcript:

Breaking out employment into more specific categories, service looms large in three divisions: a general services category that includes everything from food services to travel agencies, the wholesale and retail industries and so-called administration that includes public services, education and other types of services. Manufacturing continues to decline and is at a new low of 16%. Transportation and construction follow these other categories. One effect of a volatile economy is that people who are employed are - and will - remain employed longer in their lifespan. Most early retirements were accompanied by a return to either partial or full time employment. The eligibility for Social Security benefits will progressively move further into later years - and for those born after 1943 has already moved to the 67th year.
