The graphic in this slide demonstrates the changes within one century of time - virtually the span of one lifetime by today's standards of longevity. Those individuals in their 80s and 90s - and there are many - have seen a century of continual change and virtually no stability. They have witnessed markets rising and collapsing. They may have remembered more horses in the streets than cars at the beginning of the lives and have lived to see men on the moon, digital photography the cellular phone and the franchised hamburger. Now, only 2% of the American population lives on family farms, 17% work in manufacturing - a 43% drop in less than 40 years - and 60% are employed (or have just been employed) in service industries. United States Steel no longer exists. Only one tire company, Goodyear, is American owned and America imports most of its energy supply... using 25% of the world's resources.
