Listen to the Audio (MP3, 400 KB) or read the transcript:

One exception to other declining industries was the advent of the new computer industry - and the advancement of computing as both a commercial and a consumer product. American's such as David Packard and William Gates, pioneered desk top computing and advanced the state of the art rapidly developing standards for the technology that was to become adopted world wide. In the 1980s there were 1200 manufacturers of computers - almost identical to the origination of the automobile industry. This industry differed from the automotive industry in that it was not labor intensive. While many thousands were employed, the bulk of employment was transitioning into the service industry - where computing had found its niche. Computing also made it possible for Americans to work from home - a cultural change that is still developing.
