Transition and Change in America's Way of Life and Work.

America creates a "citizen" army of millions after Pearl Harbor and the evils of Fascist Dictators evoke a national rage. World War II has recently been referred to as "The Good War." America's losses are the greatest of any war - 400,000 in five years.

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 383 KB) or read the transcript:

Virtually an entire generation of male Americans served in the armed forces during World War II - 3.5 million men in all. It was an army of citizen soldiers, volunteers and draftees. Once again, the ability to save a wounded "GI" on the battlefield was improved over the established record of World War I. With many veterans of the first world war surviving, the disabled veterans of the second world war swelled the number of men with disabilities after 1945. The Veterans Administration, established after the first war, expanded again after the second. By the 1980s, fully 50% of all doctors in America received their training in VA hospitals. The VA also became an important resource in medical research and rehabilitation engineering.
