Transition and Change in America's Way of Life and Work.

The 20th Century is the most tumultuous 100 year period in the history of man. There are massive shifts in economies, two wars are world wide, technology grows, mutates and explodes in its variations, manifestations and- ultimately- its forms. No other period in the history of man has been so imbued with change as a way of life. Technology itself is benign, but its uses are clearly determines by benevolent or malevolent intent. Use of technology has determined the path of work in America. Whether it is the development of the automotive industry, the re-conception of agriculture on an engineering model or the explosion of computers and communications products; employment has followed the path that technology has created in the 20th Century.

Narration of Slide 32

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 350 KB) or read the transcript:

As change has occurred in American society, some have benefited while others have literally become disenfranchised by the changes. Still others in the population struggle to become any part of some aspect of the evolving economy. Certainly the African-American experience in America is a testament to indefatigable struggle, persistence and courage in a significant number of Americans trying to cope with change and overcome prejudice at the same time.

Change has largely been fomented by aggressive pursuit of technological development. In one century, America went from horses to cars, from trains to airplanes and from pitchforks to computers. Coping with this level of change requires continuous preparation, vision and education.
