Narration of Slide 23

Listen to the Audio (MP3, 398 KB) or read the transcript:

The overwhelming majority of older adults live independently - and continue to do so throughout their lifespan. 95% of the adult population over 65 live independently. Even among the old-old, as they are called, individuals over 80 years of age, all but 25% live independently - many times in spite of both moderate and severe disability.

Remaining independent is a struggle as disability and memory loss take a greater toll. However, in spite of a high proportion of Alzheimer's Disease over 85 (47% of the population over 85) most still remain independent in familiar surroundings. This process has been referred to as "aging in place" and is the subject of segment number 3 of this program.
