The "Seinfeld" show, a show about nothing, depicted living single in Manhattan, New York. The four central characters were friends living single. Few of the show's characters were married - and if they were, they seemed an aberration, possibly destined for divorce. Regardless of the show's infectious zaniness, it did capture something essential about New Yorkers... they are made up of a disproportionate population of single people. Almost half of the population of New York City is living single. New York is not an exceptional American city in this regard. Washington D.C. has the largest proportion of people living single - nearly 51%.
