The following collection of statistics and projections from statistics are taken from several sources, the most important of which is the United States Census Bureau. An extensive number of publications have also augmented the Census Bureau web site and have been significant resources for this segment and for the following segments.

Note: Census data interpretation has changed over time, definitions have been altered, changing the perception of data as well as actual counts. Some sample sizes are surprisingly low for a national survey of the magnitude of a national study carried out in 2000.
