While the birthrate generally has been declining - along with fertility rates - these declines are not uniform throughout the world. Total births in industrialized countries have remained relatively static while the total births in less developed countries have escalated.
The industrialized countries of the world may be accurately characterized as made up of a maturing population. Populations in less developed countries are very young - many so-called "third-world" countries have 70% of their population under the age of 25. The Middle-east is composed of countries with very young populations who - in spite of current events - will be heard from in the 21st century.
