Office of Developmental Disabilities Courses being developed by CATEA

CATEA is developing a series of courses to demonstrate the application of assistive technology and universal design in the lives of people with developmental disabilities. Four courses will be presented in multiple locations across the State of Georgia to employees of the Office of Developmental Disabilities. The courses will cover these topics:

  • Introduction to Assistive Technology and Universal Design
  • Home Accommodations Basics
  • Workplace Accommodations Basics
  • Community Accommodations Basics

Each course will provide participants with a different perspective of the methods used to maximize independence, safety, and connections for people with developmental disabilities in Georgia. The courses will help to maximize independence by presenting state-of-the-art as well as time-tested examples of technology and accommodation solutions for a variety of situations.

Safety is an important consideration of any accommodation. These courses will highlight areas that may pose a particular safety concern for people with developmental disabilities in home, work, educational, and community environments.

The courses will also provide insights regarding how technology can assist individuals with developmental disabilities to make “connections” with people they meet. These connections are developed as others come to understand the challenges and successes people with developmental disabilities encounter every day. Increasing the number of connections will strengthen the network of advocates for each individual and thus increase both their independence and their safety in society.

Training is being funded by a grant of the University of Georgia, in conjunction with the Office of Developmental Disabilities. The Office of Developmental Disabilities is a part of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases within Georgia’s Department of Human Resources. We are excited about the opportunity to share our knowledge and experience relating to technology, strategies, and resources to enhance the independence of the people with developmental disabilities in the State of Georgia. Although these courses are only being offered to the employees of the Office of Developmental Disabilities, if you would like more information about these training courses please contact Scott Haynes at Scott.Haynes@coa.gatech.edu.
