Introducing -- SciTrain: Science and Math for All

In today’s high-tech world, it’s essential for young people to learn science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in order to compete for the best jobs. All students should have equal access to an effective education in STEM, but research shows that students with disabilities often experience significant barriers in this crucial area.

CATEA’s SciTrain is a research initiative funded by the National Science Foundation to train high school math and science teachers to be more effective instructors for students with disabilities. Through surveys, focus groups, and teacher evaluations, SciTrain pursues the goal of understanding what accommodations are currently made in classrooms, and which ones are most needed. SciTrain uses this research to create online training modules that teachers can use to enhance the learning experience for students with disabilities and provide accommodations to improve the success of all of their students. The project also provides an online publications database and resources for assistive technology solutions to classroom problems.

All these resources are available free to the public in an easy-to-use format at: http://www.catea.org/scitrain.

SciTrain launches Teacher Training Modules

SciTrain recently launched the first three modules in our series on Accessible Science Classrooms. The modules include information on universal design in the classroom, disability laws in education and accommodating students with vision and hearing impairments. It also includes links to resource documents such as Accessible Excel, fun accommodation activities, useful assistive technology, and helpful web resources. Be on the look-out for more modules, resources and activities in the near future!
