Jon Sanford Appointed New Director of CATEA

We are pleased to announce that Jon Sanford has been appointed the new Director of CATEA. Jon succeeds Stephen Sprigle, who, after 6 years as Director, steps down to devote more time to his research and academic pursuits.

Jon is a Senior Research Scientist and Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture. A long time CATEA researcher, he has served as the Co-Director of the NIDRR-funded, RERC on Workplace Accommodations, which was recently refunded for a second five-year cycle. In addition, with Stephen Sprigle, he helped CATEA secure a second five year cycle for NIDRR-sponsored RERC on Wheeled Mobility beginning October 2009. CATEA’s two RERC’s represent almost 10% of all RERC’s in NIDRR’s portfolio. Combined, the two RERC’s are funded at $9.5 million over their 5 years.

In addition to his work at Georgia Tech, Jon has served as a Research Architect at the Rehab R&D Center, Atlanta VA for the past 21 years where he is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts on accessible environments and technologies to enable older adults to age successfully in the community.

Jon is currently teaching at the graduate level in the Industrial Design Program and serves on numerous committees, including the Emory IRB, expert/advisory panels, professional associations, and editorial boards. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters that deal with issues on environment and aging, universal design, applicability of accessibility codes for older adults and workplace accommodations. He is currently writing a book on Universal Design to be published in 2009 by Springer, Inc. On April 15, 2008, he received the Research Achievement Award from the College of Architecture. He received both his Bachelors and Masters in Architecture at Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture.
